faq’s

For questions regarding the competition, email: birds@torontobotanicalgarden.ca

Q. What does the Individual sponsored by Canadian Living category mean?

A. It has been used to identify a category of potential birdhouse builders, that do not fit the other two categories. This could be anyone 18 or over: amateur birders, a student (not in one of the ‘professional’ disciplines), a hobbyist, etc.

Q. Does ‘individual’ mean that we have to design and build it by ourselves?

A. No. You can work with friends or colleagues. When you register you will be asked to provide the names of all your team members and contact information of one of your team members.

Q. If I am in one of the other categories, can I work with someone else or a group.

A. Of course, we expect that people will want to work together i a collaboration. We do ask, however, that as in the above, that you provide only one main contact person.

Bluebird

birds_bluebirdThe Bluebird population has greatly decreased due to habitat loss. An important step we can take to help bring back the bluebird is to provide birdhouses. Is it the bluebird you will build for?

Eastern Screech Owl

owlThe Eastern Screech Owl is a nocturnal bird, with activity beginning after the sun goes down. Will anyone build this bird a hideout for the daylight hours?

Purple Martin

birds_purple-martinPurple Martins spend the non-breeding season in Brazil then migrate to North America to nest. In our neighbourhoods the Purple Martin is totally dependent on human-supplied housing. Perhaps you will choose to make a summer home for them?

House Wren

birds_house-wrenThe house wren loves to nest in odd places like mailboxes, flowerpots, and even the pockets of clothes on a clotheslines. Maybe you could build a more permanent home for our friend the house wren.

Tree Swallow

birds_tree-swallowMany adult tree swallows return year after year to the same site, sometimes to the same birdhouse. Build for the tree swallow and you may have a friend for life.

Chickadee

birds_chickadeeThe chickadee is a saucy little bird, very friendly and active. Is it the chickadee you will connect with and build for?

Eastern Phoebe

One of our most friendly and personable flycatchers known for its characteristic “phee-bee” call and tail bobbing. Why not help the phoebe build its lovely green mossy nest on your house?
