This sculptural garden forms a buffer zone between the parking lot and the gardens. Its underlying structure is built of recycled bottles and brick fragments salvaged from the construction site.

The east-facing bank showcases perennials, including a collection of hens and chicks, that can survive in sun-baked conditions where they are exposed to wind, extremes of temperature, drought, traffic pollution and salt. The west-facing slope is an example of the terraced style of gardening popular in Mediterranean countries where thin soils, temperature extremes and high winds pose unique challenges to vegetation.

HIGHLIGHTS

• The east-facing bank of the terrace is steeply sloped and showcases perennials that can survive in sun-baked conditions where they are exposed to wind, extremes of temperature, drought, traffic pollution and salt. These plants, which include a collection of hens and chicks (Sempervivum spp.), are able to grow in poor soils, and once established, can tolerate drought.

• The west-facing slope is an example of the terraced style of gardening popular in Mediterranean countries where thin soils, temperature extremes and high winds pose unique challenges to vegetation. The plants are arranged in ribbons or long drifts and are punctuated by vertical elements such as grasses, irises and exposed steel frames.

• The plants on this terrace, which thrive on a slope in well-drained soil and full sun, illustrate the variety of hardy groundcovers that can be used to prevent soil erosion. Many of the perennials and roses also have a long flowering season.

• A cloud-pruned Euonymus (Euonymus spp) hedge creates a rhythmic and textured sculpture that divides the two areas of the garden and provides structure and winter interest. Cloud pruning is a Japanese pruning technique in which the base of the branches are left exposed, while the foliage at the ends of the branches is pruned into a round
or cloud-like shape.
